In 2010, ICTJ's Children's Program and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada held a retreat on youth outreach and truth commissions in Vancouver, Canada. The retreat created a space for youth to meet and have an open discussion with survivors of the residential school system.
The event brought together a group of aboriginal and non-aboriginal youth from across the Pacific Northwest as part of the TRC’s ongoing efforts to address the intergenerational effects of Indian Residential Schools in Canada. The students joined ICTJ staff and members of the TRC, including Commissioner Marie Wilson and Survivor’s Committee Chairman Joseph Williams, to share their ideas for involving Canadian youth in the truth commission.
