Many today in our culture view marriage as a means to satisfy their own selfish desires. The attitude that says, "What can I get out of this?" reigns, and for many marriage is no longer seen as a permanent institution, but a temporary filler for personal happiness. As soon as my needs are no longer met, or I no longer find my spouse attractive or pleasing, I'm out! Lord, help us! What we see in Ephesians 5:22-33 is that the Gospel has restored the marriage relationship! God's creative intention for marriage is now enabled by the Spirit He provides(5:18). The husband-wife relationship is meant to display the Christ-church relationship. The wife's voluntary submission in love to her husband is to reflect the church's submission to Christ. The husband's love for his wife is to reflect Christ's sacrificial love for his Body, the church. In our passage today we see that the purpose of marriage is to display the Gospel! This has been God's purpose programmed into marriage from the very beginning! Marriage is meant to point to the greater union to come, our union with Christ in glory! What a privilege! The Gospel must drive our marriages! It must inform our marriage! It must shine through in our marriages! Please commit to praying this for the marriages represented at MCC, namely that they would put the beautiful Gospel of God on display for all to see, ultimately for the glory of God!
