Dizu Plaatjies is one of the world's most original musicians in the world. He was born in South Africa and brought with him a reverence for traditional cultures and their ancestral practices. He has toured Europe several times and brought his band Ibuyambo for their Canadian debut.
They bring together genres and widely divergent instruments in songs ranging from A cappella to polyphonic, while celebrating their ancestors with body paints and tribal costumes. This video is my tribute to their talent as I enjoyed their music very much.
Afrofest 2011 was back for its 23rd year at Queen's Park, Toronto. The two day event features an African Marketplace, food vendors and entertainment on two stages. It's a perfect place to enjoy authentic African music in Toronto while meeting friends and enjoying good food.
