Natural Beauty was made in response to a brief from Dove as an entry to the Kodak Commercial Awards 2011, a competition for MA student filmmakers in the UK.
The brief came from the cosmetics company’s ‘Self esteem-building programme’.
The crew was made almost entirely of London Film School students, with original music produced by Lucy Claire Thornton, a student of the Royal College of Music. Camera, lighting equipment and budget was provided by Kodak and the London Film School.
Director Jeongeun Choi studied BA filmmaking in Korea and worked for two feature films, Seven Days and Thirst as a script supervisor. She is currently studying MA filmmaking at the London Film School.
Natural Beauty is a story about a woman and her impressionable 5-year-old daughter.
One Sunday morning as she begins preparing breakfast, she realizes there is only a small amount of milk in the fridge, and so she must venture to the corner-shop to purchase some more.
Before setting foot outside the house she has to engage in a lengthy ritual of applying heavy make-up to her face, and does so under the watchful gaze of her young daughter, who carefully observes and mimics each action.
The woman eventually leaves the house but upon returning from the store she is met by her daughter who has followed her mother’s teaching a step further than usual.
