At Ace, we agree with Richard Avedon when he says, "Anything is an art if you do it at the level of an art." Sculpture, mineral, sound, and thought — some people wink and call it art. Each Sunday night our Artists in Residence program (NYC) invites members of the community to spend one night with us and do what they wish. During February of 2018, Sea Dog Theater hosted a string of intimate plays titled "Not From Here" weekly in one of our Loft Suites.
Inspired by Heinrich Böll's The Clown (Ansichten eines Clowns), "Not From Here" is an immersive theater piece about being from one place and going to another place. Sea Dog invited guests to reflect on the stories we tell in order to define ourselves, and to consider what happens when we carry them with us as we leave home. How do we make sense of ourselves as strangers in strange lands? And is true generosity possible? "Not From Here" was directed by Erwin Maas, written by Brandt Adams and performed by Dan Kublick, Martha Harms and Christopher Domig. Program artwork by Daniel Domig.
This video served as a trailer, released in advance of the performances themselves.
