This video is a personal body of work telling a story through the experience of a demolition project by immersing the viewer into the process. My contracted obligation to RIDOT and S&R Corp. on this project is to provide 15 gps marked still photos per week of progress as well as static timelapse and stationary video of the process. This film was shot, compiled, visualized, edited and produced by Stephen SetteDucati as a ‘showreel’ for Stephen SetteDucati Photographer’s website and is for entertainment purposes only.
On April 13th, 2018 at approximately 10:05 AM burners from S&R Corp. successfully cut structural steel at 12 separate points of the upper bascule section of the 63 year old Old Sakonnet River Bridge releasing the 215 foot long by 70 foot wide, 800,000 pound section to Burkhalter Rigging's connected segmental vertical lift system, lowering it 68 feet to sea level.
Preparations of building a football field size retrieval barge mounted with Burkhalter Rigging's patented vertical lift system began weeks earlier. The severely structurally deficient rusting riveted steel box girder bridge had been deemed unsafe by RIDOT and closed since September of 2012. The replacement concrete decked tub girder bridge opened in 2015.
S&R's demolition division began the process leading up to this point in October 2017 with a demolition plan from FootHills Bridge Company. The slow process of deck removal was followed by land and water based structural disassembly which continued through December.
Unfortunately four back to back Nor’easter storm systems with 75 mph winds and upwards of 30 inches of snow slowed forward progress from the end of January until the middle of March.
S&R Corp's workforce of project managers, foremen, field techs, operating engineers from Local 57 (RI) and Local 4 (MA), laborers from Local 271 (RI) and burners from Local 1421 Building Wreckers (MA) worked in unison to complete work up to this point safely and without incident.
