Geniventure: Explore genetics with an intelligent tutor

Geniventure is a free, online, digital game that engages students in genetics and heredity by saving virtual dragons from extinction. Geniventure leverages the popular software, Geniverse, that has been used in classrooms by tens of thousands of students by specifically highlighting the role of proteins in genetics. Through scaffolded virtual investigations, students first explore the physical traits that result from allele combinations, then dive deeper by zooming into cells and manipulating the proteins that ultimately give rise to those traits.Geniventure is designed to engage students from middle school through higher education, with guidance and reflection facilitated by an instructor. In the GeniConnect project, we are providing an opportunity of genetics learning to afterschool students by giving them a chance to play Geniventure side-by-side with science professionals, while also learning what genetics looks like in the real world. In the GeniGUIDE project, we are aiming to support students and inform teachers by including an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) that tracks students’ actions as they play the game, provides appropriate feedback and hints based on those actions, and relays the relevant information to the most intelligent tutor in the room – the teacher – via a comprehensive teacher dashboard.
