2:40 min on 05/07/2017 is an algorithmically generated short film composed of the real-time data collected during a previous exhibition of another of Shaw's work, the interactive installation Habitual Instinct. The film's essence consists of the collected and archived data points Habitual Instinct captured of its participants, their interactions, and experiences with physical installation. Each data point is representative of a computer sensor's reading, meaningless on its own but grouped together; it asks the viewers the question their understanding of their own digitally collected data, the accuracy, and precision of that data which is captured and collected about them on a daily basis. Generatively animating the accumulative data points allows for the viewer's imagination to contemplate the potential interpretation of the data by the algorithm and question if there is such a thing as too much data.
2:40 min on 05/07/2017 is a continuation of Shaw's artistic practice that tries to physicalize the invisible components of technology and their methods of observing, archiving and attempting to quantitatively understand the physical world by using data as an artistic material for creation.
