Eastern Bluebirds are a fairly common bird here in the Midwest of the U.S. but their population does suffer from predation, lack of nesting habitat and extreme weather conditions. This video highlights their plight.
Over the years, I have learned to build bluebird nest boxes on poles with squirrel guards. Without the guards, they quite often succumb to raccoons. This year, their second brood faced challenges from extreme heat, black flies and lack of food.
It was a tough fight, but between the parents and some help from their caretaker, all five chicks from the second brood successfully fledged from their nest box.
I hope you enjoy this video of their plight.
