BOOKSTORES DRIVE ME CRAZY. They turn me on, they intoxicate me, they seduce me with their covers, tease me with their spines. Their titles tickle my curiosity, their content call me to adventure, their profound truths promise self-actualization. But bookstores also FREAK ME OUT! They tear me apart, they thrust me into fits, they induce panic-attacks that leave me fixated on how little time I have left on this earth and how few books I'll finish before that time is up. Especially today, in this world of binge-worthy television shows, 24 hour news cycles, podcasts, and nonstop social media checking, when the hell am I supposed to pick up a book? For me reading has become a casualty of modern life, a terrible tragedy which entering any bookstore exacerbates. This madness cannot continue! And it won’t. I refuse to be driven crazy by this anxiety any longer.
I am setting off once and for all to solve where books fit into our modern content diet. In this multi-part ongoing series I will interview experts, educators, speed-reading gurus, clear thinkers, and avid readers to acquire as many life-hacks as I can to re-calibrate my consuming habits. I will also venture to the far ends of the earth (mostly just western Europe and South America) to discover the most beautiful bookstores in the world because, well, why not?
Do bookstores turn you on? Stimulate your senses? Do they cause you undue stress? Do they at once make you crave books while also make you lament how little you read? Do you also feel the need to balance your content diet? If so then this series is for you!
