To prevent cancerous cells from multiplying, to destroy these cells, or to relieve certain symptoms caused by cancer, your oncologist has prescribed oral therapy. Cancer therapy prescribed orally which means, by mouth, has several advantages. Taking medication in the comfort of your home gives you greater control over the treatment, reduces the number of visits to the oncology clinic or the hospital, cuts down on travel costs, and interferes less with daily life activities. With greater freedom also comes greater responsibility. Certain forms of chemotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy can be toxic for your cells. These drugs, which are cytotoxic or need to be handled with precaution, require special or particular attention. Here is a video made by the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), to help you understand how to safely handle your treatment and manage waste.
