EXCERPT - Installation view of "Product of Play" at SMART Project Space (Amsterdam), as part of the exhibition Prix de Rome 2011.
Product of Play explores how subjectivity is constructed through organized practices and techniques, redefining ‘activities of play’ and their implicit self-monitoring and calculated means of productivity. A child’s manipulation of brightly painted wooden blocks is captured in the artists’ own laboratory – a square window of ambiguous affects; of ordering, designing, behaving and the search for self-reassurance, all the while a girl prepares and waits to perform… exposed trepidation, her young laugh morphs into a voice of classical precision as she turns her gaze towards the viewer.
Rosalie Eppink (Actress), Bryan Vandamme (Actor), Xapp KinderCasting, Janke Dekker (Vocal Coach), Edward C. Thomson and Roderick Heitbrink (Camera 1 and 2), Derek Brunen (Sound Recording and Editor Assistant), Steve Rushton (Research Advisor) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (excerpt of “The Magic Flute” aria – “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen”).
Produced with the kind support of Fonds BKVB, Prix de Rome and Rijksakademie van Beedende Kunsten.
