This film briefly documents Tim Sandys' sculptural work Functional System, installed for Glasgow International 2018 at Laurieston Arena, Gorbals. As part of the broader exhibition, Tilting At Windmills (featuring the works of Lizzie Hudson and Bobby Sayers), the work contributed to a series of artworks and events addressing Glasgow's civic and communal identity.
Functional System draws from compressor elements within turbofan engines long produced in Glasgow's aviation industry. The title refers to Durkheim's societal anlyses of structural functionalism as well as the uncertain status of a conspicuous new mechanism in a public space.
The piece was installed on the 19th April, 2018 for the opening of the Glasgow International Festival. It was vandalised and destroyed the following afternoon.
