DNF, but not badly. Among my teammates, Alec took field sprint for 2nd. One big guy in light blue Squadra Coppi jersey I've never seen before jumped for win with 1/2 lap to go. Leroy 6th-ish with gear trouble in sprint (switched rear wheel right before the start for a flat), Sam/Connor in pack, and/or caught behind last crash...Ross C. I believe hit pavement in the crash but not badly.
Group rode fast, hard, and very sketchy throughout. Haven't had the "this is a very sketchy race" feeling since Medford, where there was another big crash (last corner where I thought it would be). This race often had crashes on the slight uphill and today would not be different. Though not a good break course I was teased by the idea of trying some, and not wanting to stay in or sprint with this group was a motivator. Attacked thrice: 1) 1/2 way through race...let a strong rider I didn't know I was about to go and jumped. He came, I pulled, he pulled, I pulled...more slowly, and boom they were right on us. 2) After ? 4-5 laps recovery, looked to go again and moved up through the middle. Felt a pause and went off too the left (both times used the road and moved laterally when jumping). Lee from Amorosa went with me from the right side..beautiful..he pulled, I pulled, he pulled, boom they were right on us. #3) didn't want to be in this sprint, so thought about a leadout jump with 1/2 lap to go. Moved to the front and saw teammates in good position there for the sprint if it stayed stretched out a bit, but group mushroomed early...as we rounded the corner with 1 to go in the distance. Jumped along...cleared the stretch and about to go up the rise while popping...Sam (teammate) right on my wheel (Sam..let OTHERS pull up to me with you on their wheel). Anyhow totally popped and moved to left side of road just in time for a huge midpack crash to my right. I pulled over since was going DFL and was a bad trauma...lots of bleeding from an unconcious cyclist's head laceration. I helped deal with that along with ambulance who was quickly there. Why crashes on this wide open course? I think these "not scary" courses don't lead to appropriate caution (compare with more intimidating Navy Yard courses with better riding, and/or just 1 or 2 abreast since narrower).
So...som 190+ HR moments, battery died on video after 30 minutes of 45..only first attack should be there, got some experience, others seemed to like having someone else to try to attack with. NP 259/ avg 210 (73kg), max/avg hr 196/178. Watts: max 1025, 5 sec 916 (both not far from my best), with 30 sec and 1 minute (583, 430) high than usual for race...closer to my best max (low 600s, 500), max/avg speed 38/ 26.5 (fast, not surprising on this course).
