The Desert National Wildlife Refuge is the largest wildlife refuge outside of Alaska and home to one of the largest populations of desert bighorn sheep in North America. It is also a Native American sacred site that dates back thousands of years. In 2016, the Air Force announced plans to withdraw 300,000 acres from the Refuge for military use as a bombing range.
