Sarah Shourd, an American peace activist and environmentalist sat down for an interview with SIERRA magazine. In July 2009, Sarah went hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan’s Ahmed Awa mountains with her fiancé, Shane Bauer, and her friend, Josh Fattal. Crossing into Iran accidentally, they were arrested and charged with espionage. Sarah was detained in solitary confinement for 410 days before she was released for health reasons. Shane and Josh remain there. Their long-awaited trial took place July 31st, the two-year anniversary of the arrest and the verdict should be received within a week.
