What was planned to center around an anti-war protest during the annual idyllic Tulip Time festival in Holland, Michigan evolved into something else entirely. The film provides a glimpse into a uniquely prosperous Midwestern town through the eyes of an 80-year old shoe carver, Elmer Veldheer. One of the last of his kind, Elmer works on a tulip farm in the Dutch-founded community of Holland, Michigan. His story frames a town whose traditions are its livelihood.
