33 was a project specifically created for Persbo Studio. This umbrella title includes three components of the project: a performance (video above) that took place within the chapel of this former church, an installation of drawings housed inside of a barn on site, and Luktvasslimo also inaugurated the sculpture park with a permanent piece.
The title 33 alludes to the numerological connection between the artist recently turning 33 and that being the same age that Jesus died.
In this dense and ambitious project Luktvasslimo sets the occult within navel-gazing pop culture in relation to individual perceptions. He associates social phenomena with the mythic qualities of pop culture and religion.
33 materializes the baseless argument and exposes us and the artist to the rhetoric of mainstream media and contemporary culture. The project takes on an authoritarian voice, that speaks in tongues, echoes in the chapel: it exhausts, motivates and questions the common man's freedom of choice. Luktvasslimo reevaluates trivial gestures and articulates them with a monumental reverberation. 33 does not condemn manipulation, it allows us to balance on the border between it and proselytization.
Trygve Luktvasslimo is a Norwegian artist who lives and works in both Berlin and Vefsn, Norway. His work is inspired by the relationship between the metaphysics of the domestic sphere and religious processes along with traditional beliefs.
