EXIT was a sound installation measuring approximately 50’x75’ in area situated in the basement of a former parking lot located in Upper Manhattan. This work expanded upon ideas I had been investigating over the past year: spatialized sound environments and sound environment as social, spiritual, emotional and political space. Transformation of the subterranean parking lot into subconscious realm was realized through ritualized planning and preparation. The title “EXIT,” inspired by the sign at the entrance of the basement, invites participants to leave their gross waking experience behind them as they enter into an atmospheric underworld.
