The East Lake Farmers Market is helping to revitalize an economically-challenged area of Birmingham.
East Lake was a very prosperous community in the 1940s and 1950s. "White flight" to the suburbs over the mountain started a decline of this area that continued until the 1990s. Since then, artists, graduate students, young professionals and others have moved into the community.
As this video indicates, there's still a lot of poverty and the streets, sidewalks don't receive the attention that more "prosperous" areas receive.
East Lake Farmers Market is a valuable resource to everyone in East Birmingham, but especially those who can't easily get fresh produce at an affordable price.
