La Physique Générale (HD video, 26 min, 2010/2011)
By Vinicius Duarte
“La Physique Générale” refers to the concept developed by the 19th century scientist/naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, in which for the first time in modern science a unified and cosmological analysis of the many disparate physical phenomena is attempted. The film fictionalizes Humboldt’s trip (which in reality took place at the beginning of the 19th century) through Latin America. Inhabiting a post-colonial imaginary and drawing from one of Robert Smithson's Yucatan Mirror Displacements, the narrative speculates on two distinct cosmological conceptions: the modern and the savage. The film is a temporal meditation on the contingent historiographical processes involved in the inscription of “narratives” into “history”, or else, “myths” into “mythology”.
