I spent a week in Svalbard in May 2018, surrounded by water and ice, aboard the National Geographic Explorer. Coming from the American Southwest, these Arctic scenes were other-worldly - majestic yet fragile, vibrant but devoid of much of the color spectrum. I was moved by the profound beauty and the overwhelming sense of awe and gratitude to be in such a wild place that is rapidly changing. I understand now that I, like other people who love the Arctic, am not only a storyteller about this place, but, to my future students, I'm also a memory holder of what the Arctic once was.
I am always grateful to National Geographic and Linblad Expeditions for the opportunity to experience the Arctic as a 2018 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow.
