Gestures (Both Known & Unknown) (2018)
guitar, metal picks, guitar amp
"I have always had a strained relationship with the electric guitar. I spent many years trying to teach myself to play - very much enjoying the process of naive improvisation and discovery of the sounds a guitar can make with the many guitar picks I wore through. After developing technique, and exploring genres from blues, folk to heavy-metal, I seemed to reach a dead-end with my playing. This process also become more problematised as I studied classical-composition, and adopted all of the fastidiousness, perfectionism (and sometimes neurosis) often associated with pursuing ‘Western-Art Music’ - that it became increasingly more difficult to play guitar without being overly critical & pedantic. Gestures (Both Known & Unknown) is my symbolic and sonic attempt to reconcile the structured and perfectionistic process of composing music, with the freedom I originally associated with my early guitar explorations – whilst also opening these possibilities to the public."
