Leo Kessler is an American with German ancestry. He arrives at post war Germany to work as a sleeping car conductor at the railway company Zentropa. He meets and falls in love with Katharina, the daughter of the company director, Max Hartmann. However, dark forces are at work, and Nazi partisans are out to get all who are cooperating with the allies. Soon violence and death catches Leo on his nightly train rides through the ravaged landscape.
