A powerful, absorbing documentary on the creation of Lars von Trier’s fascinating drama DOGVILLE starring amongst others Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Stellan Skarsgaard, Ben Gazzara, Lauren Bacall and James Caan.
For most people, just to see behind the scenes footage of this documentary, will be a delight. But it also provides a much deeper look inside the world of filmmaking including some moments of insight that are hard to believe.
This documentary combines exclusive interviews with footage shot on location in winter covered Sweden e.g. from special made confession boxes as seen in Catholic churches. In these ‘boxes of truth’ all actors and Von Trier during the whole shooting process talked, cried, laughed, sung and confessed directly to the camera.
DOGS & DEER – DOGVILLE CONFESSIONS contains deleted scenes from the feature film, a look inside the mind and character of Von Trier, Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany and other star actors, and the many problems and great successes that were encountered. While recommended for those familiar with DOGVILLE, it is a great film to watch even if you are not familiar with the original film.
A must for any Von Trier and Kidman fan or even any film fan, this documentary is fascinating and is a mould for other behind-the-scenes documentaries. The footage covers everything from idea to premiere.
