Guatemala has the highest birth rate in Latin America and the effects of this growth are clear: the country has one of the highest rates for both infant and maternal mortality in Latin America, and the forth-highest incidence of chronic childhood malnutrition in the world.
Local non-profit group WINGS says that family planning is the answer to rising populations, and the related problems of poverty, poor health and illiteracy.
Al Jazeera’s David Mercer followed WINGS community educator Evelyn Roquel in the country’s western highlands and came back with this report.
