Appeal to Keep Them Flying
Shuttleworth is unique in that its aircraft are maintained in airworthy condition, making it a living, working collection. This enable visitors of all ages the chance to watch history take to the skies every May until October, hear the engines, and smell the caster oil in the air!
The Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society (SVAS) support the Collection in many ways, including funding aero parts – an essential part of keeping such a diverse range of vintage aircraft ‘in the air’. However for several years now the increasing cost of their support has substantially exceeded membership income, and this gap has been subsidised from SVAS reserve funds.
Both the Westland Lysander and Gloster Gladiator require major refurbishment of their Mercury engines. The cost of this is substantial, in the region of £100,000 for vital parts. For the SVAS to fund this from the usual aero parts budget could mean that both aircraft are unable to display for at least two or three seasons.
We want to raise the funds for these vital repairs and are appealing to you to help us raise the £100,000 to keep the Westland Lysander and Gloster Gladiator flying for the foreseeable future.
We welcome donations of all sizes to help us to reach this target.
