Stanley Dearman explains the arrests and trial surrounding the civil rights murders. FBI solved the case after receiving a confession from one of the Meridian Klansman, which they used to arrest and bring to trail 21 men in the first round and 19 men in the second round. The lawyers of the accused claimed that the evidence was based on hear-say and required a in-court testimony from the man who gave the confession. The judge found the information to be hear-say and ruled against the prosecution. However the grand jury later indicted the men. Dearman explains how at that time the federal government wasn’t allowed to charge for murder so the men indicted were charged with the conspiracy to deprive the three civil rights workers of their rights. The rest were acquitted. 06/19/04.
