samira fled the taliban pre 9-11, and in new york had met abdul, got married, started a family, & settled in long island. homeland security came to her house in the middle of the night, took her from her two baby boys (her husband was already at work), and sent her to a windowless detention center in new jersey where she awaited deportation to afghanistan.
this is the first doc i directed, in 2005. we shot in south ferry, long island, and new jersey. i'd read about samira's detention in a local paper & tracked down abdul in his south ferry coffee cart. soon after we started shooting, a rare & sudden change for the better...
