Dr. Jeff Myers begins by explaining how sled dogs in Alaska are overly excited as soon as they see a sled but once they are harnessed to the sled they respond to whispered commands. They do this because this is what they are made for and therefore their master only has to whisper to get their attention. Compare this to today’s culture where everything is yelling for your attention through commercials, TV, radio, t-shirts, etc., all reinforcing the idea that the purpose in life is to make money in order to obtain whatever is the coolest new thing. The result is that this generation tends to have no purpose. Myers says that we should be able to find our calling, and like the sled dogs, be excited no matter how hard the work is and respond to a whisper in the midst of the chaos. He focuses on providence, design and work to begin to answer how to find your calling giving practical tips in each area in order to achieve this.
