On August 16th, Senator Squadron and colleagues hosted a symposium titled "After 'I Do': What's Next for LGBT New Yorkers?" Even after the historic marriage equality vote, LGBT New Yorkers still face a number of challenges after they’re married -- including DOMA, GENDA, interstate travel and relocation, adoption, social security, and health benefits.
The panel discussion featured Ross Levi of the Empire State Pride Agenda, Tom Ude of Lambda Legal, Melissa Goodman of the New York Civil Liberties Union, Everett Lo of the Social Security Administration, and special guests US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Deputy Secretary for Civil Rights Alphonso David, the Senate sponsor of marriage equality State Senator Tom Duane, New York City Comptroller John Liu, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and many others.
