I was back in a darkroom last week after a long time away. The magic of working with film photography and chemical printing hit me again with incredible pleasure and delight (and some frustrations as well). Along with the magic appearing before my eyes, I also have a renewed appreciation for dust, scratches, delicacy, chemical mishaps, jammed sprockets — and analog accidents that can make an image even better than imagined.
While my final big print was in the wash, with the lights on, I stood transfixed for a while, just soaking in the details, grain and lovely tones. Then I ran to get my digital camera to record a snippet of video. Couldn’t help myself. I’m such an image junkie, I want it all, and I didn’t want to lose that moment either.
