This installment of Behind The Badge takes you inside the National Firearms Examiner Academy in Beltsville, Maryland where investigators learn to match bullets to firearms, restore obscured or removed serial numbers, and to study crime scene reconstruction. We opened this piece with a brief look at the Phil Spector murder case to give it a news peg. Mike Kosnar’s script explained the “CSI effect” and allowed us to “fair use” a brief clip from the show’s opening which increased the caliber of our spot.
About Behind The Badge:
I teamed with producer Mike Kosnar to develop this continuing series of web-extra stories. Shot, produced, written, and edited “DJ style”, these segments take you inside federal law enforcement agencies and feature interesting looks at their labs, training, and investigative techniques. Working closely with the graphics department, I designed the production open and close that are used with each installment. They feature video clips, a rights free music bed, and dynamic animation all designed to be keyed over the first and last shot of the piece. We also created animated lower thirds in a matching style. These elements provide a strong brand identity to the series. In addition to prominent placement on msnbc.com, these well-received reports aired nationwide on NBC affiliates.
