Day Zero in Cape Town. Cape Town has been afflicted by long periods of drought for a number of years. The water shortage caused by low rainfall and falling water levels in the reservoirs became so severe last January that water supplies for the city were expected to run out in the spring. The underlying causes are complex. The economy and the population of the city are growing fast, intensifying demand for clean and fresh water for the city's inhabitants and for water users in the surrounding area. Unfortunately, climate predictions indicate that water stocks in the area are actually declining and that droughts will become longer and more frequent. Cape Town must prepare for a future with limited water resources.
