A parametric system for creating catenary curved surfaces was creating using a physics solver. Each initial sheet is pinned at three to four points, and the sheet is allowed to flex. This creates the curvature of each shell, and is fully animatable.
In order to panelize the structure, a script was written in Modo which takes each panel and creates each surrounding mullion. The result was unfolded, flattened, laser cut, and reassembled to create the model.
The catenary is inherently structurally stable, and the final structure, made of stiff cardstock, was surprisingly strong for its weight.
