A diffuse field of 8,500 mechanical bollards creates a boundary the same way that old forests form gates at the end of open fields.
The plans are made as displacement maps where dark grey is the lowest point, and white is the highest.
The bollards are made in several sizes. The small is appropriate for pedestrians, the medium is appropriate for seating, and the large is appropriate for vehicle traffic. The intervening bollards are set into a more irregular set of scales.
Each of the bollards has a defined position throughout the day. This creates open driveways in the morning to allow commuters to enter the site, throughways for deliveries during midday, and a theater space for events at night. As the program evolves through time, each individual bollard may be repositioned in new configurations that allow even more configurations.
