Gold Dust is not just a film of Iain Sinclair reading from his book Ghost Milk, beautifully accompanied by Bill Parry-Davies on Saxophone.
In this 7 minute film Sinclair calls time on London’s Grand Olympic Project. He reveals another side to the Olympic landscape, one crisscrossed by trains carrying nuclear waste, siroccos of toxic dust, and other details the authorities would rather we didn’t know.
The irresponsibility to workers and local residents caused by the incompetent management of works on the highly contaminated land of the London Olympic enclosure demonstrates the psychopathic mind set of those in charge of London 2012. This view is reinforced by London's acceptance of sponsorship from Dow Chemical who's denial of liabilities over the site of the Bhopal accident remains an open wound.
The story begins in 1901 when Marie Curie discovers radium. The nuclear age is born. In the 63 years following, before someone decides the disposal of radioactive materials must be restrained - in those years of science, industry, and war, Britain develops nuclear power and The Bomb, while other industries are dancing with the devil of radiation. Also between those years, in an industrial backwater and dumping ground in the East of London, radioactive wastes are buried.
Decades later in that same burial ground, an oubliette imprisoning waste of the early nuclear age, the Olympic gold rush begins.
The construction bosses, the compliant bureaucrats, the five ringed tomb robbers have no time to lose. They show no mercy to the repository of mysterious elemental forces. Amid the poisons of industrial exploitation, the prospectors, architects of dust, their thousand mechanical excavators, churn every inch of this sacred earth. While from their home high on the rocky flanks of Mount Olympus 12 Greek gods look on as the mortals tear asunder protective layers, eager snouts pressed into the 2012 trough.
In an unlikely alliance of brooding spirits, the ghost of Marie Curie, and the Viking god Thor, from whom the radioactive metal Thorium takes its name, are disturbed. Similarities, explosions, chemicals and cheap labour. An East London suburb, Silvertown, 1917, a munitions factory explodes, 73 dead. 1984 Bhopal, India, the Americans are here, another explosion, this time thousands dead and maimed.
And just as the Greek Gods look on, so too may the ghosts of Bhopal, while from corporate headquarters, with marble flooring and waterfall feature, Dow Chemical, warriors of untruth, make the plans of living psychopaths. And in London, another marbled headquarters and sculpture cast in solid metal, olympic psycho-paper shufflers wheel and deal, hatching plans to make themselves rich, and to make it happen, “The Greenest Olympics Ever”.
Ideological siblings, olympic and corporate bedfellows, wheel and deal. Blood money circulates. The fat cat controllers of pollution shirk their responsibilities in London and in Bhopal.
Action and reaction. The decision makers, may wear the ancient sign of square and compass, but it can’t help them navigate the uncharted sea of karmic consequences.
Have the gold diggers awoken what should have been left to sleep?
London 2012 sponsor Dow Chemicals are owners of the company responsible for poisoning and killing twenty thousand people in an industrial accident in Bhopal, India. Some may see an appropriateness, or even synergy, in this choice of sponsor.
We are currently seeking funding to make a full length documentary on the issue of the radioactive contamination of the London Olympic Park.
