In May of 2011, I wrote an essay about wanting to return to Guatemala in search of a young girl who I met five years ago (2006). I was awarded a travel grant from the University of Texas and on July 4th, I flew down to Guatemala City by myself at the age of 19.
For about four weeks, I lived in the city of Antigua in Guatemala where I met people from all corners of the world and all walks of life. I traveled all over the country from Atitlan to Tikal, fell back in love with the Spanish language and culture, suffered from two parasites, and took close to 2000 photos.
During my trip, I also found my young friend Marta Elisia. Reflecting on my visit to Guatemala, words cannot express what I felt/feel so I'm borrowing from Marta Elisia who always said "wow."
