Kevin Schlei developed TC-11, an Apple downloadable application for iPad that functions
as a programmable synthesizer activated by multitouch. Unlike other virtual synthesizers that adapt traditional hardware controllers using slides and buttons, the TC-11 has the feel of a traditional music instrument.
The composer created a menu of presets from which the performer can select a few and play it by using fingers touch and tilt motion, similar to playing on an acoustic instrument. The score and the presets are open-ended in performance and the player selects the musical materials.
Jeri-Mae Astolfi, who premiered the piece, conceived a realization that included four movements using the four pages of the score. Bits Into Pieces (BIP) is the first composition asking a solo performer to play a musical instrument and the TC-11 simultaneously.
BIP is in four movements and should. be viewed sequentially on the Vimeo site.
