"Hi, this is Steve Eulberg with another Habit for Your Healthy Music Habitat.
I'm here at WCU (Western Carolina University) where I've been all week for Dulcimer U, for mountain dulcimers, and now hammered dulcimer weekend.
And one of the things that people are always asking is,
"How I can I get into a tune, when I don't know what it is?"
And what I suggest is to simplify it and play just the downbeat of the tune.
Play the name of the chord: strum it, hammer it, whatever it is... strum it JUST on beat one.
If you REALLY want to simplify, play ONLY when the chord changes.
So when that chord comes up, play that name and when it changes that name that time.
Then you can move to playing on the downbeat of each measure, and get the shape of the tune.
So....simplify it, just play a little bit.
And have fun with it."
