1 July 2018 marked 20 years since VCAT was established. Victoria became the first state to merge a range of boards and tribunals under one roof to form Australia's first super tribunal.
It’s been 20 years since VCAT first opened its doors to the public, and boy have we come a long way!
Victoria was the first state in Australia to wrap up a whole range of smaller boards and tribunals and bring them in under one roof, which became the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Now we resolve more than 85,000 cases every year in around 50 locations throughout the state.
We have gained momentum from those early days as a tribunal and are striving to be modern in every way we can.
That means focusing on the way we provide services at every touchpoint and putting our customers first.
Our members are experts in their fields and they are extremely hard working and focused on giving people a fair hearing.
And we’re finding new ways to use technology and extend the reach of these services.
We’ve got a customer service improvement program that has delivered us a single phone number.
We’ve launched a new Strategic Plan VCAT for the future, and we now have our first female President Justice Quigley. We are very excited to have Justice Quigley on board as part of the tribunal’s future.
There’s the day-to-day process of resolving disputes but there’s also a real buzz about the place with new initiatives that are truly leading the way for tribunals across Australia.
Like Online Dispute Resolution, which is working towards people having their small civil claims resolved online.
We opened the first stage of a new Guardianship Hub for lodging and managing guardianship applications, which is simple and easy to use.
And we’re reviewing our online forms and correspondence that we send to parties to make it easier to understand.
As VCAT enters its 20th year, we are so proud to be serving the people of Victoria and those who have disputes that involve Victorian law.
Thank you to everyone who has helped VCAT achieve so much over the past 20 years.
