"Porpoises in Peril, produced by Andrew Wegst, has its world premiere screening at the 2018 WCFF in New York, NY. This film is one of four celebrity series from WildAid. Porpoises in Peril stars world famous pianist Lang Lang.
SYNOPSIS: Porpoises on the Edge follows the journey of world renown pianist Lang Lang as he travels to the interior of China to learn about the plight faced by the rapidly decreasing population of the Yangtze River Fin-less Porpoise. This once plentiful mammal is slowly following in the wake of the Baji dolphin, another local aquatic mammal driven to extinction only a few years ago. We learn how river traffic and over fishing have driven this species to less than 1000 individuals. We then travel to remote Baja, Mexico and join Sea Shepherd in the hunt for poachers of the Totoaba. The swim bladder from this fish sells for thousands on the black market in China. Yet another porpoise, the Vaquita has been driven to near extinction from being caught in the gill nets used for the Totoaba. We meet the folks working to keep the Vaquita alive and also meet the poachers who are driving it to the brink. It is a tale of human greed and also conservation from both sides of the globe.
