Boléro 2011 Kate Squires 15 mins (looped)
The projection combines the musical score of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro with a looped film of the artist descending a staircase. Ravel’s Boléro was made famous by British championship figure skaters Jayne Torville and Christopher Dean when they adapted it to win the world figure skating championships in 1984. The music is built over an unchanging rhythm on top of which is repeated a single theme which is constantly re-orchestrated throughout the piece. The music corresponds to the rhythm created by the person running down the stairs and the melody to the shapes created from the movement of the skirt. The artist is interested in the trance-like effects of the shapes made by the flow of the skirt in relation to the music.
