Starting in 2018, the DMV began issuing new "real ID" cards with chips in them, which will be a requirement for boarding domestic flights starting in 2020 (unless you have a passport and bring that along instead)*. As a result, overcrowding at the already busy and slow DMV offices throughout the state, which are broadly regarded to be pretty unpleasant to spend time in, has caused many people to lose entire days to waiting in line. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to actually address the shortcomings in bureaucratic government efficiency, under-staffing, or there being too few facilities to accommodate the exponentially increasing state population, but I can make things a little more interesting for some of the people trapped in DMV purgatory. With a tiger.
This very special tiger, Wendy, was built via tremendous team effort (by Arashi Seiraika, Naomi Hummel, Jesse Vail, Colin Creveling, Elijah Cherweznik, Lillian Berman, Lyra Levin, Brian Feraru, Rachel Ann, Joanna Stringer, Shannon Walter, David Beihn, Courtney Holmes, and Bunny Holmes - with her very own "tiger fragrance" designed by Kat Meler) is a one of a kind puppet originally constructed for the Vespertine Circus' show, HiNGE.
I (Bunny Holmes) spent about a week doing maintenance and repairs on her (sadly her back legs were damaged badly enough in storage that they had to be amputated and will one day be replaced) and then my co-conspirator, Trevor Tarin and I set out to take her to the DMV, to get her "Tiger registration" done. Our dear friend Avital came along for the adventure and filmed the outing for us to share with all of you. Enjoy!
*"The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin offering the option to apply for a federal compliant REAL ID driver license or identification (ID) card beginning January 22, 2018 at DMV offices statewide. Californians may choose either a REAL ID or a federal non-compliant card.
The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 was passed by Congress in response to the events of 9/11. Under the REAL ID Act, all states must meet requirements set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for its driver licenses and identification cards to be accepted for federal purposes, such as boarding a domestic flight or visiting a military base or certain federal facilities, by October 1, 2020.
