Boys, directed by Kaj Jefferies and Rosie Matheson, examines and explores the changing idea of masculinity.
This film shot by Kaj Jefferies is an extension of Matheson’s portrait series ‘Boys’ and provides a raw and unfiltered insight into British young men discussing the ever-changing ideologies of gender identity, their unique views of modern masculinity and what it means to them to be a man in todays society.
The video reveals what lies under the facade, challenging our socially prescribed pre-conceptions of maleness.
Shot entirely on Super8, with just Jefferies and Matheson as the crew, recording sound via their iPhones. The short documentary reveals an incredibly raw and truthful image which is reflected in the very nature of shooting straight onto film; there are imperfections, there is only one take and there is no hiding. It creates an honest and very personal portrait of the subject.
The film is a tribute and testament to the young men who have revealed themselves to us so faithfully.
