Interpreting the word ‘invisible’, a word commonly used by older people about their place in society, is the basis of this video. In particular, I am looking at the area of fashion and whether fashion abandons older people or older people simply abandon fashion.
The fashion photograph and the youthful body are so intertwined in the production of desire that it's easy to overlook older people even being interested in fashion. During my 15-month residency with Draíocht in Blanchardstown, I turned my camera towards ten older residents of Dublin 15 who talked about themselves and fashion, and their thoughts on invisibility in this particular area.
This short film was made which documents some of these personal thoughts on growing older with fashion. Located in a place of their choosing, the piece placidly explores this theme with three of the participants.
