Tree of Light: Dahab's Mission- Raise environmental awareness regarding issues and opportunities in Dahab, Sinai in order to create long-term sustainable recycling, energy, and water systems.
July 29th, 2011 The First Seed: Underwater Cleanup and Beach Cleanup in Dahab, Sinai. Thanks to the Bedouin children, divers, tourists, and local companies that contributed to the event.
August 4th, 2011 The Second Seed: Workshop at Sheikh Salem House. Egyptian IDentity Crafts led the workshop and taught local children how to create toys, and goods from rubbish. See http://facebook.com/thetreeoflight for more photos.
October 15th, 2011 (GOAL): Weekly Tree of Light Gathering. Collaborate with Assalah Public Schools in order to teach children and families how to build with recyclable materials. In collaboration with local dive masters and marine biologists, begin marine life education and provide snorkels as incentive for children.
March 1st, 2012 (GOAL): Eco-Office. Receive approval from Assalah Public School board to build a Tree of Light Eco-Office near the football pitch. Use the existing Tree of Light Gathering to begin the process of Eco-Building. Provide in-class incentives (such as candy or Tree of Light bracelets/snorkels/hats) for children to bring building materials (plastic bottles). Utilize existing underwater cleanups and beach cleanups to gather plastic bottles and rubber tires as materials for the Eco-Office.
July 27th, 2013 (GOAL): Recycling Center. Build a green self-sustaining recycling center in Dahab. Use eco-materials such as those used in the Eco-Office and include Tree of Light members in the process of building.
Distribute up to 70% of usable assets accrued from the Recycling Center into Dahab’s Green community. In collaboration with GreenTech, pursue vertical-wind power generators and clean water filtration systems in order to provide power to the Recycling Center and clean drinking water to Dahab. Promote locally and globally concerning Tree of Light developments in attaining sustainable recycling, energy, and water.
October 13th, 2013 (GOAL): Recycling Collection. Continue the cyclical process of recycling and re-investing into the community. Use raw recycled plastic to produce Tree of Light recycling bins,invest in collection trucks, and higher locals to collect bins on a weekly basis.
October 14th, 2014 (GOAL): Green Community: Set a goal for Dahab to attain Tree of Light’s “Green Community” rating. This includes official ‘Low Carbon-Footprint” recognition, organic gardening education, and self-sustaining: recycling, energy, and water systems.
Install GreenTech’s vertical-wind power generators and use as the main power source for Dahab’s commercial district. Install GreenTech’s water filtration technology to provide clean drinking water to Dahab.
Promote developments to encourage regional adoption of the Green Community’s economic, environmental and health benefits in efforts to establish a Green Sinai and prevent the destruction of Sinai’s coral reef and marine life.
