There's a reason Kid Rock wrote the lyrics "It Was Summer Time in Northern Michigan." Every kid who grew up in Metro Detroit couldn't wait for summer to come. A simple 5 hour drive, and you were in a whole new magical world called Northern Michigan.
Bed times didn't apply, sunburns were fashionable, water was everywhere from Great Lakes to lakes to rivers to streams, canoeing was a sport, giant hills of endless sand to play in, saunas were real with wood stoves and got over 200 degrees, Petosky stones where like treasure, pasties were fuel, trees were a shade of green God reserved just for up there, sunsets looked like art, bonfires roared nightly, and parents seemed just a little bit less like parents, and more like people.
And every summer, there was that girl. Whether one who's family was up there in the campsite next to you, or one from the little town near where you were that would come to the same lake or river to play. Seemed they were a little easier to kiss when it was Summer Time in Northern Michigan.
Unless you have ever been there, you just can't truly appreciate it. Was the highlight of every kids life.
Detroit is Detroit. But anybody from Metro Detroit, from the north end Romeo Where Kid Rock is from, to Downriver Detroit, the south end, Southgate, last place I'm from before I moved out 7 years ago, you still will claim it with pride as your home town.
We're the Motor City, Rock City, Hockey Town, The D. We got Greektown,(before the casinos ruined it) and the Laikon Cafe, no better place to eat, Mexican Town, with real homemade tamales wrapped in corn husk, the People Mover, the Ren-Cen before GM took it over and took away our revolving 72nd floor drinking lounge, Woodward Dream Cruise, the Heidelberg Project, 8 mile at the north border of the city limits, (regardless of the movie name, 7 mile and 6 mile is way more crazy as anybody from there will tell you), Motz Burger (been there over 80 years), White Castles, the Ambassodor Bridge and the Tunnel to Canada (which Canada now sucks though for detaining me and my girl from 3am till 9am), and some of the most exquisite built architecture and designed buildings that even though now sit empty with broken out windows and graffiti, one day sat in all there grandness with hand carved stone cornice, relief, and statues. Google any of those things.
Every year I go home, and spend half my time Up North, and half in Metro Detroit. This year my girl Jackie and I spent 12 days. While there, Kid Rock came home to play. Wasn't in the plan, but while downtown for some dinner at the Fox Theater, decided spur of the moment to walk a few blocks to Comerica Park, and we got a couple last minute tickets from a scalper.
They say there ain't no party like a Detroit party, cuz a Detroit party never ends. I don't care what city you go to see him in concert, until you see him come home to Detroit and play to a sold out crowd of over 40,000 wild Detroiters, you haven't seen nothing. This video is part of that concert, some scenes from Detroit, and then some of the most beautiful video you'll ever see from while we spent "Summertime In Northern Michigan."
I love where I live now in FL, but being a Yankee ain't so bad, and every summer I will be home to visit. Hope you enjoy.
