To You. To Us. is a very special project to me. Aside from being the first production in which I've worked as a producer, writer and actor all at the same time, it has a strong personal element to it. Two and a half years ago I was in the middle of production on the first short film I'd written when unexpectedly my father passed away. My family and I were shaken to our core in a more profound way than any of us had ever experienced. Most of all, my mother had lost her best friend, her lover and her closest companion.
During the year that this film was produced I was up to my eyes in grief, anger, a full time job and a desire to tell stories that had only grown and become more focused. My father was a strong supporter of my dream. I've heard that when going through a period of extreme grief the best thing to do sometimes is immerse yourself in work as a way of distraction. In a way, doing this made me feel closer to him, as if it were a send off from my father saying, “Keep going. You have more to offer than you know.”
I was lucky enough to grow up in a household where my mom and dad really were best friends and wanted nothing more than to spend their time together; I've always felt very fortunate to have grown up in an atmosphere like that. To You. To Us. is a testament to the will, strength and grace of my mother. Modest though it may be, this one's for you Mom.
