The Azores are a group of 9 islands. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,360-1,950 km off the coast of Lisbon and the Portuguese mainland. The archipelago covers an area of approx. 2,346 km². Mystical and almost untouched by tourism, these islands are a world on its own.
The charming island world hidden far out in the Atlantic Ocean is about a 2 hours flight away from Lisbon. All 9 islands are unique. They are part of a huge underwater mountain range that crosses the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the intact ecosystem, social stability and cultural identity, the Azores were voted the second most beautiful archipelago in the world by National Geographic in 2007. The 47 member states of the Council of Europe declared it the "Region of the Year" in 2010. Angra and Terceira and the vineyards of Pico have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
And why are the Azores a hot spot for divers? All the great whales of the Atlantic pass by the islands, spend the summer there and give birth to their offspring. Also Dolphins, Mobulas, Blue Sharks, schools of fish and much more thrill the divers. And not to forget about the nature, the landscape, the local people, simply unrivalled!
Our project mainly focused on Sperm Whales. We wanted to film and photograph the wales for some audiovisual projects and try do snorkel with them. And boy, we were lucky! 2 days out of 10 the conditions were perfect and we could observe the animals at close range. Simply WOW!
